Award of ESME Certificate in Medical Education

All participants who complete the five day course will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance. Some participants will choose to complete further work which, together with their participation in the five-day programme, will qualify them for the award of the ESME Certificate in Medical Education. This Certificate will be awarded on the basis of satisfactory completion of a portfolio which demonstrates that the participant has applied and reflected on the principles discussed in the course during his/her own day-to-day teaching programme. The portfolio may be in electronic (preferred) or paper-based format. Activities and reflection undertaken during the five-day programme may be included in the portfolio. Critical incidents that demonstrate what has been learned during the course also may be included.

Further information and advice about the portfolio will be provided at the end of the 5-day course.

Normally participants will have 6-8 months following completion of the face-to-face Course to submit their portfolio. During this time support and guidance will be available on line.

Participants working on the Portfolio Assessment will be entitled to:

  • Access an area of the ESME website restricted to ESME participants which will include updates and additional references where appropriate, provided by the course director;
  • Participate in an online discussion forum to facilitate sharing of information between peers and tutors as appropriate;
  • Receive limited assistance by email from the course director*;
  • Receive a one-year membership in AMEE, including both hard copy and online access to Medical Teacher;
  • Submit and have assessed by the course director a portfolio;
  • Receive an ESME Certificate if the portfolio reaches established standards.

*It is expected that participants work either individually or with their peer group. It should be noted that the fee for the portfolio has been set to cover the cost of the portfolio assessment and the award of the Certificate. While limited on line support is available, this does not equate with that which could be expected in a full-length distance learning programme or degree program.
